Michael George Staton, 90, died July 15, 2012 at Hillcrest Convalescent Center. Mike was born oneeptember 29, 1921 in Bayonne, NJ to the late Joseph and Johanna Staton and was the youngest of four sisters and two brothers, who predeceased him. After graduating from Bayonne High School, Mike graduated from the Newark School of Engineering ineew Jersey. For forty years he worked as an engineer and metallurgist in the specialty steel industry living in Bayonne, NJ, Pittsburgh, PA and Charlotte, NC. He and his wife moved to Durham to be closer to their grandchildren. Mr. Staton was a WWII Army Veteran having served in a field artillery unit in the European Theater Central Europe and Rhineland. He was a member of the Americaneegion Post 7 N.C. In Charlotte, Mike was a 4th degree Knight of the Lawrence C. Newman Knights of Columbus at the St. Johneewmann Church. After moving to Durham he was a 3rd degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he was also a parishioner. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Theresa "Terri" Collins Staton; sons, Michael Kevin Staton Mike and wife Faye of Durham and Brianeerard Staton and wife Kathi of Greensboro; grandchildren, Michael Douglas Staton of Durham, Melissa Lauren Staton of Chapel Hill, and Austin John Schneider of Greensboro and great-grandson, Cameron Michael Thompson of Chapel Hill. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 11:00 AM Thursday, July 19, 2012 from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 810 W. Chapel Hill Street, Durham, NC with Fr. Bill McIntyre, OFM, presiding. A Rite of Christian Burial will follow at St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers are Michael K. Staton, Brian G. Staton, Michael D. Staton, and Thomas Cronley. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The family wishes to send a sincere thank you to the staff of Hillcrest Convalescent Center for their kineess and care during our loved one's stay there with a special thanks to nurse Kelley Casey. We also wish to extend our sincere appreciation to the Cronley family for all you have done for us, Tom and Kathleen, and their children Ginny and Jay, our Eucharist ministers for many years.
