Mary Ann Lumpkins, 74, of Oxford. God called Mary Ann O???Brien Lumpkins home Sunday, January 28th, 2018 to tend His flower garden. Mary Ann loved flowers but hated weeds. No matter where she went, if she saw a weed she would pull it and throw it away. She was the daughter of the late Harold L. O???Brien and Frances Breedlove O???Brien, born on July 21, 1943 and was a lifetime resident of Granville County. She attended East Carolina Uneersity and received a Masters in Education at NCCU. She taught in the Granville County School System exceeding three decades of service before retirement. Mary Ann was a member of Oxford Baptist Church serving as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and the Missions Director. She was actively involved in Oxford Baptist???s support of Penn Avenue Food Ministry, the Back Pack Buddies, Church and Community Ministry (CCM), and the Appalachian Back Packs. She led the church in preparation of the In As Much Meal. In addition to her church ministries she was active in DAR, Extension Voluneer Association, and Ronald McDonald House. Mary Ann, along with her husband James, was awarded the 2017 Johneenn Citizenship Award by the Granville County Chamber of Commerce. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James W. Lumpkins: two sons, Timothy D. Lumpkins (Tracy), and James Michael Lumpkins, both of Oxford: two grandchildren, Benjamineeth Lumpkins (Mallory), and Abigail Kate Lumpkins: two brothers, Charles O???Brien (Joyce) of St. Johns, Florida and Donald O???Brien (Faye) of Annandale, Virginia: one sister, Betty Lou Davis (Ronny) of Oxford: two sisters-in-law, Shirley S. O???Brien of Kernersville aneelizabeth Ann Callis of Oxford. She was predeceased by a brother, W.J. O???Brien. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 30th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center at Oxford Baptist Church. The funeral will begin in the church sanctuary at 1:30 p.m. Following the funeral, the interment will be at Meadowview Memorial Park in Oxford. Flowers will be accepted or donations to Church and Community Ministry (CCM) at 108 Critcher Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
