DURHAM-John Frederick Moulton, 93, died on March 16, 2012 at the Pavilion at Croasdaile Village, Durham, NC. He was born oneeptember 11, 1918 in White Hall, Illinois to William Giller and Frances Greer Moulton. His father was killed in an accident whenee was a child and the lessons he learned growing up with a sinee mother ineepression-era farm country stayed with him all his life. John was valedictorian of his graduating class at White Hall High School and received a BA from the Uneersity of California at Santa Barbara. Immediately after his college graduation, he joined the US Army and served overseas during WWII. While stationed with a hospital unit in North Africa, he met Army nurse Lt. Susanne Lynas and they were married in Lucca, Italy. Although his active service ended after the war, he served in the US Army Reserve for 35 years and retired with the rank of Colonel. He attended Columbia Uneersity on the GI Bill and received a Master's of Hospital Administration. John and his young family relocated in 1948 when accepted a position as administrator at Watts Hospital in Durham, NC. He became CEO of Watts and was employed there for over 20 years. He was especially proud of his involvement with the Watts School of Nursing, and under his leadership it became one of the first RN diploma schools to offer associate degrees. In 1971 he became CEO of the Cumberland County, NC Healthcare System and its three hospitals. During his career he help develop the NC Hospital Association, was on the board of the National League for Nursing, taught and mentored hospital administration students at Duke Uneersity, and served oneeveral state and national healthcare commissions. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Susanne Moulton of Durham and four daughters, Jean Gaugh Jon of LaGrange, KY; Lynn Wright Tom of Savannah, GA; Sandy Moulton Thomas Wong of Durham and Pam Moulton of Bethel, Alaska. He also is survived by six granddaughters and five great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons. A private Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider contributing to a scholarship at the UNC Gillings School of Public Health.
