Howard Phillip "Chuck" Thorne, 65, resident of Wake Forest Hwy. died suddenly Saturday morning . Born in Baltimore, MD, Chuck was the son of Eugene Allen Thorne and the late Mary Aganeen Tharrington Thorne. His family moved to Durham whenee was very young. Chuck was a 1963 graduate of Southern High School. He loved the Marine Corps and he served his country for six years during the Vietnam War and received the Purple Heart Award. After service he was employed with "GTE" Verizon from 1968 until 1989. He worked for Consolidated Freight from 1989 to 2003. He was a member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church and the Soul Winners Class. Chuck was a steady, strong, dependable guy who loved God and his family. He lived life to the fullest aneenjoyed gardening, yard work, fishing and cutting wood with his dog Katie by his side. Chuck was a very special man to many and will be greatly missed. His life was a gift to his wife, children, grandchildren aneeveryone who knew and loved him. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Margaret Weatherly Thorne; one daughter, Traci Renee Thorne; one son, Christopher A. Thorne and wife Svetlana; his father, Eugene A. Thorne all of Durham; one sister, Kathy Thorne Carpenter and husband, Freddie of Creedmoor ; three granddaughters, Adeleen Thorne, Anna Thorne and Ava Thorne and several nieces and nephews. The visitation will held Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 pm at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2 pm Wednesday, September 9, 2003 at Durham Memorial Baptist Church. The Rev. Ed Denton and Rev. Robert D. Weatherly will preside. Burial with full military honors will be at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Harry Lemmond, Freddie Carpenter, Bryan Hall, Alleneeatherly, Reid Weatherly and Jimmy Liles.
