Gerald Glenn Cooley

Gerald Glenn Cooley, 85, died May 26, 2021. Gerald was the second son of Harvey E. and Norma “Mozzelle” Glenn Cooley, both deceased. Born and raised on a farm in rural Durham County, he learned the lessons of hard work. Upon graduating from Bethesda High School, he worked for the state of NC. It was there that driving large trucks began a forty-six-year career. He drove perhaps millions of miles and knew every nook and cranny in the state.
He served state side during the Vietnam War, joining the NC National Army Guard and was discharged of the rank - Sergeant. He then served in the Army Reserves.
After retiring he enjoyed driving the American road ways, the only way to really see the land. Gardening and farming were a necessity in raising a large family but he continued to plant an abundance of food to watch it grow and sharing the harvest with many people. He enjoyed playing cards, checkers and dancing with friends. Hunting and fishing kept him outside and enjoying times with sons, grandsons and friends.
Gerald grew up in the church. He was baptized in Christ and joined the congregation of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church. Upon moving to Virginia, he attended Easters United Methodist and Friendship United Methodist.
He is preceded in death by his first wife of almost 48 years, Jewel “Ann” Martin Cooley. Together they had five children. David “Marty” Cooley deceased. Surviving children are Michelle Cooley of Durham, NC, Amanda C. Dixson (Chris) of Snow Camp, NC, Kevin Cooley, of Durham, NC and Norma C. Wallace (Bob), of Apex, NC.
He is also survived by current wife of 3 years Evelyn Williams of Chase City, VA, 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Brother Billy M. Cooley and sister Sandra C. Nackab. Many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am, service to follow at 12:00 pm in the Chapel. His body will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Durham immediately after service. Officiates of service is Rev. Jim Fry and Rev. Amanda C. Dixson. The family ask everyone to wear a mask and follow social distancing during this time to protect all who come to celebrate Gerald’s life.
Pallbearers are Danny Page, Joel Morris, Eddie Cooley, Dave Slater, Jason Cooley, Justin Page, Ronnie Layell, and Josh Wallace.
