Frederick Trott Doane

May 3, 1939 — November 11, 2023

Frederick T. Doane, 84, of Durham, NC and Colchester, VT, died November 11, 2023 of complications following surgery. Fred was the son of Vernon Harden Doane and Kathryn Trott Doane and was born in Washington, DC.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Heike; two children, Marcus F. Doane and Katrin Doane Goldfarb; his son-in-law, Michael Goldfarb; and two grandchildren, Sam Goldfarb and Emma Goldfarb. Fred was predeceased by his brother, James W. Doane.

Fred attended The Landon School in Bethesda, MD, Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT, and Sir George Williams University in Montreal, Canada. He was a chemist who founded two environmental testing laboratories, Industrial and Environmental Analysts, and later Paradigm Analytical Labs.

Fred was smart, witty, loved good conversation, and could fix just about anything with moving parts. He seemed to have every tool for every task you could imagine. He was led by scientific curiosity and experimentation, but was also creative and well-read. Fred was fiercely independent, but he loved connecting with people. He had a wide-ranging and diverse group of friends - some that he had known since high school, friendships forged during his decades in the lab business, and others that he met during his so-called retirement.

We miss him dearly already.

A celebration of Fred’s life will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Fred’s memory to the Catalyst Scholarship Fund, a fund he helped establish for the continuing education of employees at The Forest at Duke.
