Dimitrios Varelas

Chapel Hill – Dimitrios Varelas, M.D., 75, passed away Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at his residence of natural causes. He was born on January 13, 1946 in the town of Mari in the Peloponnese of Greece. He was always proud of where he came from and loved to talk about how he was a strong mountain man from Mari. He came to America in the 1970s to complete his residency in psychiatry at Wake Forest. Dimitrios worked as a psychiatrist for North Carolina until his retirement in 2005.
Dimitrios was married to the love of his life, Eleni Zourdou in 1978 and remained married until her death in 2014. He was a family man who enjoyed traveling, especially back home to Greece, gardening, and do-it-yourself projects. He was a good man, affectionate father, loving brother, and a devoted husband.
Dimitrios is survived by his children Georgina and her husband Ryan of Apex, NC and John Peter and his fiancé Justina of Chapel Hill, NC, his brother Triantafillos who lives in Vlahioti, Greece, and his sisters Eleni and Panagiota who live in Melbourne, Australia. He is preceded in death by his wife Eleni, his parents Ioannis and Politimi Georgopoulou, and his sister Maroulitsa.
The funeral liturgy will be held at 9:00 AM Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Durham. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. Friends may visit from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Monday, August 16, 2021 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, with the Trisagion litany said at 7:00 PM. Gifts in memory of Dimitrios may be made to St. Barbara's Church, 8306 Hwy 751, Durham 27713.
