Carroll Mary Cain

March 5, 1921 — March 9, 2022

Carroll Cain, age 101, died on March 9, 2022.  Carroll was born as Carroll Mary Margueritte Manning on March 5, 1921, at the family home in Burbank, South Dakota.  As a child, Carroll spent time in her father’s general store, on the farm, riding a horse, and attending school in the one-room schoolhouse in Burbank.  Carroll attended college at the University of South Dakota where she met her future husband, Earl Cain.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1942 and taught at several South Dakota schools prior to her marriage to Earl at the Army Airfield in Alliance, Nebraska in May 1944.  After the war, they lived in Evanston, Illinois (twice) while Earl attended graduate school.  They also spent time in St. Louis, Missouri and Eugene, Oregon. Carroll and Earl eventually settled in southern California.  Carroll was a homemaker for her husband and two children while also taking classes at Cal State Long Beach and helping with registration at the university.  She enjoyed reading, discussing current events, and playing cards, especially Bridge and Rummy.  Her grandchildren spent many happy vacations visiting their grandparents in California.  Carroll moved to North Carolina in 2016 to be near her family.

Carroll is survived by her son Scott, daughter-in-law Rachel Willis, grandchildren Brian Cain (spouse Emily Collins) of Winter Garden, Florida, Kelsey Cain (spouse Adam Caudill) of Everett, Washington, and Nolan Cain (spouse Fanny Ezenfis) of Durham, North Carolina.  She is also survived by great-grandchildren Flynn and Evangeline.  She was preceded in death by her husband Earl and son Mark.  She was the oldest of 6 children and was preceded in death by her siblings Kathleen Weisz, Richard Manning, Marilyn Stueck, James Manning, and Aileen Manning.
