Carl Eugene Herweyer

The Reverend Carl Eugene Herweyer died Wednesday, November 16, 2022 after a period of declining health. Carl was born February 4, 1932 to the late John and Hattie Herweyer of Byron Center, MI. He attended McBain High School, McBain, MI then served honorably in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Richmond, Richmond, VA and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, NC. He also did graduate studies at Union Seminary in Richmond, VA.

Carl served as pastor of Long Green Baptist Church, Baltimore County, MD; Hunton Baptist Church, Glen Allen, VA; Main Street Baptist Church, Christiansburg, VA; Braggtown Baptist Church, Durham, NC and as Associate Minister of Temple Baptist Church, Durham until his retirement in 2005. His community activities included much church related involvement. In volunteer work, he was Vice President in charge of development of Warm Hearth, Inc. in its early stages. Warm Hearth is a retirement facility near Blacksburg, VA.

His survivors include a son, Willis and his wife Stephanie of Hillsborough, NC, a daughter Miriam Ellis and her husband Michael of Bahama, NC. Also three grandsons, Lucas and Magnus Herweyer and Maddox Ellis and a granddaughter Macey Ellis. He is also survived by three brothers, Elliot and Eleanor of Goochland, VA, John and Cindy of Middleville, MI, and Larry and Donna of Lake City, MI. There are also many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife beloved wife of more than 60 years Sylvia, three brothers, Elmer, Dale and Earl, and sisters Ella Tinholt and Evelyn Hill.

A memorial service will be held Sunday November, 20th at 2pm at Temple Baptist Church, Durham officiated by Reverend Dietra Arrington-Cates. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1-2pm at the church.
