Basil Wallace Bassett, age 82, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2016 at his home in Efland. A native of Durham, he was the son of the late Lacy Phipps Bassett and Lois Hay Bassett and was preceded ineeath by his sons, Anee Wallace Bassett and Basil Randolph Bassett and a brother, Lacy Phipps Bassett Jr. Basil proudly served his country in the Uneed States Army. Fishing for cat fish at Kerr Lake and camping/hiking at Hanging Rock State Park were some of his favorite things to do before Alzheimer's took its toll. He was a member of Farrington Road Baptist Church. Basil retired from Public Service Gas Company in 1996 after 38 years of service. Surviving are his beloved wife of 59 years, Barbara Sparrow Bassett; his daughter, Sharon Whitfield Autry (Jerry) of Durham; his step-son, Rick Whitfield (Terry) of Pittsboro; his brother, Ralph Bassett (Faye) of Durham; grandchildren, Randy Bassett of Chapel Hill, Chad Goodwin (Becki) of Chapel Hill; Lisa Kaye (Steve) of New Jersey; step-granddaughter Katie Whitfield of Wilmington; three great grandchildren, Aneew, Matthew and Sarah Kaye; former son-in-law, Wayne Goodwin as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM, Friday, March 11 at Ephesus Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Greenee officiating. Burial will follow in Ephesus Baptist cemetery. Friends may visit from 1-2 PM at Ephesus Baptist Church prior to the service. Flowers are welcomed or memorial contributions canee made to a church or charity of your choice. The Bassett family would like to thank VA Home Base Primary Care, Hospice; Teresa Deese, Michelle Locklear and Pauline Blanks for their loving care.
