Mrs. Minnie DiSclafani Sasso, 95, peacefully passed away in her home, early Sunday morning, February 16, 2014.
A native of Palermo, Sicily, Minnie was born March 11, 1918, the third daughter to the late Antonio And Gemma Olori DiSclafani. At three years of age, her family made the pilgrimage to America. In fact, she spent her third birthday at Ellis Island, NY awaiting to be released from the small pox quarrentine that the ship she had traveled on had been placed under.
As she got older, Minnie took to dressmaking in New York. She met, fell in love with, and married Vincent Fredrick Sasso, to whom she was faithfully with until his death in 1973. Although she and Vincent never had children of their own, Minnie was a “second” mother to many children throughout the years. She volunteered for many children and adult organizations, including the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill. Minnie led an active life that included bowling until age 94.
Mrs. Sasso is preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Vincent, her parents, a brother, four sisters, and a nephew.
Survivors include her sister, Sandra Perillo of Durham, NC; her nephews William R. Perillo and William Carrozza; her niece, Lorraine P. Werts; her name-sake, Domenik Maxton Sucheki; and many other great nieces & great nephews.
A Funeral Mass for Minnie D. Sasso will be held 10:15AM, Friday, February 21, 2014 at The Catholic Community of St. Thomas More, 940 Carmichael Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
