Durham- Merle JACK Hammersley was born on February 7, 1923 in Dayton, Ohio.  He was the son of the late George and Elnora Hammersley.  He died at the VA in Durham on June 6 after a long declining illness.

He is survived by his loving daughter Jacqueline Hammersley; his grandson Logan Hammersley. He was preceded in death by his wife Sarah Pendergraft Hammersley and his son, Kenny Hammersley.

Jack was a mechanic by nature, growing up on a farm in Ohio during the Depression. He joined the US Army in 1943. And saw action at Omaha Beach on D-Day, and fought with Patton’s Third Army in every major ETO conflict during the war, including St. LO, Nancy, Metz, Bastogne, the subjugation of the Rhineland, and the final Battle for Germany. He was a decorated combat veteran and Bronze Star recipient.

After the war he married his war time sweet heart, moved to Durham, and eventually started a family and a successful auto repair business, which he operated until his retirement.

Jack will be remembered as a man of faith, and integrity.  His patriotism and national service, his great love for his family, and his endless compassion for others less fortunate were hallmarks of his life.

The service will be on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at 11:00 am, at the Hall-Wynne Funeral Chapel. There will be a visitation on Friday from 6-8, also at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.

Flowers will be accepted, and memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. Arrangements for the Hammersley family are under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.

Mr. Hammersley offered up his life in Europe in the darkest days of WWII, to provide the freedom we enjoy today as Americans. The Bible says there is no greater love than a person being willing to lay down his life for a friend. Thank you Mr. Jack Hammersley, for your loving and courageous legacy that you leave for all of us to greatly admire and appreciate. You are a true American Patriot and Hero. I hope to shake your hand and give you a big hug in Heaven. America Loves You, and I do also.

I was a friend of Kenny’s at Bragtown and Northern. I met your Dad when I was in grammar school. Your Dad was a great man, always friendly, smiling and always had time to stop and talk . I know he will be deeply missed. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Jackie and Logan
I have such good memories of Uncle Jack. His pancakes he would make when I would spend the night and how he always tried to step on our feet in the mornings. He was always there whenever Mama or Daddy needed him. He loved his family and would do anything for you. What I will remember most is how he took care of Aunt Sarah even before she needed taking care of. She always had coffee in bed first thing in the morning!! Jackie you’ve done a great job taking care of him and I know you are going to miss him greatly. There’s nothing like a good daddy. I love you both.
