Matthew David Hollister

Posted By Hall-Wynne On October 11, 2014 @ 11:44 am In Durham,Obituaries | 78 Comments

Matthew David Hollister, 23, died unexpectedly Wednesday in Charlotte while visiting friends. A Durham native, he was born July 12, 1991, to Beth Anne & David Hollister. Matt completed grammar and middle school at Immaculata Catholic School, and graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School. He continued at UNC-Charlotte, and currently was working in Florida while planning to further his education.

Matt was an accomplished athlete. He was among the state championship swimmers on the Cardinal Gibbons team, and also a member of the school’s surf club. He was an inveterate car racing fan, deeply immersed in the auto racing culture. Matt had a lifelong passion for the internal combustion engine. Race drivers and crew members were among his close friends. He drove M-3’s and participated in shifter-kart races. Most recently Matt made his annual pilgrimage to Road Atlanta. He also frequently attended races at V.I. R. Matt was a devoted Duke fan – a “Cameron Crazy” from birth.

Matt was profoundly influenced in his faith journey through the Franciscan friars at Immaculata, who exemplified tolerance, living simply and justice for all. He had an enormous heart for the underprivileged, a hope for economic equality and deep care for the earth. He manifested this through his continual generosity and selflessness. Matt Hollister will be remembered for his quick smile, distinctive laugh, lavish hugs and his open heart.

Surviving are his parents, Beth Anne & David Hollister of Oxford; his sister, Catherine at Elon University; grandparents, Robert Hollister, and Mary Ellen and James Selmensberger.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 11:30 AM Wednesday from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Fr. David McBriar, OFM presiding. Friends may visit 5-8 PM Tuesday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.

Gifts in Matt’s memory may be made to: Immaculata Catholic School, (Tuition Assistance for the Needy), 721 Burch Ave. Durham 27701.

I want to express my deepest condolences to all of you over the loss of your dearest Matthew. I can remember the days, like it was just yesterday, when one of you would come to Early Learning Center to pick up Matt and the end of the day when Matt and Carol were students together. I live in Palm Harbor, Florida primarily now. But I just happened to be in North Carolina for a visit with Carol and Ryan when I heard about the tragic death of Matt. So, I will be able to attend the visitation and funeral. Carol and Matt were classmates together all the time until they all went off to college. I have very fond memories of Matt and am so sad to hear about his passing. He left us far to soon and will be missed dearly by all those who knew him. I hope this note will bring you some comfort and that Our Lord will help you in this time of sorrow.

Condolence from Kayleigh and Jeanine Lynch on October 12th, 2014 8:11 pm

The Hollisters,
On behalf of the Lynch family, I would like to extend our deepest condolences on the loss of Matt.. the beloved son, friend, and brother. The Hardscrabble “crew”, in many ways, has lost a part of their childhood. Matt was always one to drop anything he was doing to comfort a friend in need, regardless of the circumstances. At a young age, he was able to show what a true gentlemen and friend was to so many. I will never, ever forget his readiness to take on a new adventure. He made the dreadful hour car rides to Cardinal Gibbons quite pleasant with his sense of humor, and enthusiasm. I cannot imagine the pain you must all be enduring. I hope that you can take comfort in knowing that it was a not only a blessing to know Matt, but a privilege. We offer our deepest sympathy and open arms during this painful period.

Love,
Kayleigh and Jeanine Lynch

Dear father, mother, sister, grandparents and Matt’s relatives and so many friends John and I send love and deepest sympathy to each of you. May an angel spread its wings around you and comfort you as you try to figure out the way to be without your precious son, brother, grandson, cousin and of course all of us friends, because I never met Matthew, but thanks for the wonderful picture(which I will keep to look at) because when I saw it I felt like I had met Matt,, but I had not. We both have met you, David and Beth at the Granville county Cattlemen’s meetings. Cows and new born calves have been John’s therpy sessions for many years. They give him solitude and the wonder of God’s creation.
The comfort chapter, Psalm 23 reads The Lord IS_ my Shepherd. How wonderful to know ! May God’s love and your knowledge of it give you hope in the days ahead. Judy and John Brewer @Mile-Away-Farm. We hope to see you in the near future.
