DURHAM – Mary Westbrook Chapman Berini, loving wife and mother, age 94, passed away on February 1 at the Pavilion at Croasdaile. She was born September 27, 1917 in Durham to the late David Simeon and Emma Faucette Chapman. She was a lifelong resident of Durham, NC and grew up on Watts Street.
Mary graduated from Duke University on 1936 with a BA degree in Education. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and, after graduating, taught elementary school in the Durham School system for many years.
She loved reading, playing the piano, traveling and doing crossword puzzles. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her husband and three children. For our mother, the glass was always half full. She was one of the most uncritical, selfless people we have ever known. She loved the small things in life: a beautiful day, sitting on the porch and listening to music. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband, Louis Berini, also of the Pavilion; children; Robert T. Ivey of Memphis, TN, Emmaly Ivey Barry Maynard of Cincinnati, OH and Judy Ivey David McLeod of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert T. Ivey, Sr.
A private graveside service will be held at Maplewood Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 6-8 PM Friday at Hall Wynne Funeral Home in Durham.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mary C. Berini Fund at the Duke University Library, Alumni & Development Office, Box 90851, Durham, NC 27701.
