Mary Reedy

Posted By Hall-Wynne On August 8, 2008 @ 12:00 am In Obituaries | No Comments

Mary Catherine Reedy, 64, died on Friday, August 8, 2008. Mary was born in Chicago, IL to the late Alberta and Dr. William C. Hambley on February 10, 1944.

Mary was exuberantly positive and giving, a joy to be around. Her life expressed four driving passions, her family, structural research on molecular machinery in living cells especially muscle, her garden, and painting watercolors. Family and biology started early, browsing “Gray’s Anatomy” on her surgeon father’s lap, and continued in her powerful scientific partnership for 35+ years with husband Michael at Duke University, and in her memberships in the Biophysical, Cell Biology and Microscope Societies of America. Gardening and watercolors were brilliantly done and deeply satisfying to her, even though time for these was always short, because her superb talents for biological electron microscopy absorbed so much of her time and energy, resulting in 59 scientific publications listed on PubMed.

Mary is survived by her husband Dr. Michael Reedy of Durham; son Michael Carter Reedy of Los Angeles; stepchildren Tad and Heather Reedy; grandchildren Amaritta and Franklin Reedy of Seattle; brothers Dr. William C. Hambley, Jr. and John Hambley of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; and sister Barbara Keenan of Pikeville, KY.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 1737 Hillandale Rd., Durham. NC. The Rev. Anne Hodges-Copple will officiate. Interment will immediately follow at the church’s memorial garden.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mary’s name may be made to the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, attention Theresa Dark, Duke University, Box 90341, Durham, NC 27708. Condolences for the family of “Mary Reedy”

Condolence from Martha on November 3rd, 2008 12:00 am

I have such happy memories of being with Mary, mostly at church camp at Stuart Robinson and Highlands in Kentucky, from the time we were 10 until we graduated from high school. Even then, we had philosophical conversations along with those about boys and dance steps. I was with some of those old friends this weekend and we toasted those memories and good times. I’m sure her friends from all times in her life share a little of your sadness. Martha Copeland

Heard about this some time ago. But just found this site. Knew Mary in high school and college. and through Presbyterian church work. Very close friend. She was smart very and pretty. Sad to hear about it. The world is less without her. My condolences.
