Marianna Rose Goodwin, a resident of Chapel Hill, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at Duke Medical Center. She was 12 years old. Marianna was born in Durham on April 28, 1994 to Frank E. and Rosalind Volpe Goodwin. She was a rising seventh grader at Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill

Marianna was a very determined and energetic individual, strong-willed and ready to overcome any challenge. She loved people and made friends wherever she went. Marianna loved to organize theatrical events for the family and made her own crafts designs and creations. She played piano, tennis and loved to swim. Marianna loved her tap dancing classes at the Ballet School and was an avid bowler. She was a girl scout, a world traveler, an honors student and a very hard worker. Her infectious laugh and wonderful sense of humor delighted everyone around her. Marianna was lovely, courageous, a truly awesome child, who filled our lives with love and her wonderful self.

Marianna is survived by her parents: Frank E. and Rosalind V. Goodwin of Chapel Hill, NC; her brother, Adrian Goodwin, of the home; her grandparents: Edmond and Rose Volpe of Staten Island, NY; Francis and Greta Goodwin of Topsham, ME.

Dearest Erik, Rosalind, Adrian and all the Goodwins,

From the moment we heard the name you had given to your daughter we thought Marianna was a beautiful name – graceful, sweet, gentle, melodic, nice to say and just as nice to hear someone else say, feminine, and strong…. and we know that all of those words are ways in which those who knew her and loved her would describe the girl, her spirit, and her soul.

We always knew from her photos that she was a beautiful fun-loving joyful girl, but when we finally met Marianna in person in Maine just a few weeks ago, we could not get over the pure sweet energy she radiated. There was a glow and a light about her that was part of her presence – with a lightness like she had wings.

She is surely dancing with the angels now.

With our love and sympathy,

Condolence from Emily Williams on July 28th, 2006 12:00 am

Rosalind ,

I am so sorry about Marianna death.Actually my daughter Brianne is a CNA at Duke and told me about her death but the name did not click until I read it in the paper. She was a cute girl. I did call Olivia and Emily said they came by but Olivia was to upset to see you. She said they will come over one day. I will try and come to. Much love ,Mary Taylor

Condolence from Penny Ray on July 29th, 2006 12:00 am

I will never understand the mysteries life presents – some things just don’t make sense. Of this I am clear – Marianna embodied love, joy, twinkle, courage, and the willingness to face life head on – no matter what challenges it presented. She showed us how to do that with remarkable efficiency – in a very short time, with petite energy. In striving to follow in her footsteps, I will always be connected to her.

To the beloveds in her life – Erik, Rosalind, Adrian – who gave her so much caring love and support, please know you are in my prayers.

Dear Mr and Mrs Goodwin and Family

Marianna was a delightful child and a joy to teach. She arrived early in class each morning and always looked for work to do or jobs that she could help me with. She was always cheery and always brightened my days.
I feel for your pain at this time but also envy you the joy that Marianna gave to you in her short life. My thoughts are with you,

Gayna Perry
