Marianne Brauner died on May 18, 2015, in her Galloway Ridge home in Pitttsboro, NC. She was born in Kaiserwerth, Germany, on October 29, 1922, and was the daughter of Marta Spieler and Adolf Ophoven.
Marianne came to America in 1959 and in her travels met her husband, Walter Brauner, in Coconut Grove, Florida. They married in 1961 and moved to North Carolina in the early 1960’s. Marianne and Walt shared a long and happy life on their Perry Road farm in Alamance County, NC, with their loyal canine companions: Jenny, Josh, Rusty, Luke, Jake, and Emma.
Marianne retired from the University of North Carolina where she worked many years in the Department of Biostatistics, UNC School of Public Health (SPH). She later worked in the SPH Dean’s Office and the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. In her retirement, she enjoyed water aerobics, taking long walks, and reading. Marianne was a fierce backgammon competitor!
In addition to her husband and parents, Marianne was preceded in death by her siblings, Margarete, Elizabeth, Walter, Adolf, and Herman. Marianne is survived by cousins Heinz and Lilli Voss of Duesseldorf, Germany; cousins Sigurd and Ute Spieler of Waldkirch, Germany; great-niece Sabine Sassen Baumann of Schhwalbach, Germany; and great-nephew Peter Sassen. She also leaves behind many special friends at Galloway Ridge, as well as her “daughters,” who will cherish her memory.
Special gratitude is extended to Nansi Greger-Holt, RN, MPH, FNP, of Greger-Holt Consultants, Geriatric Care Management, for her caregiving and to UNC Hospice for providing compassionate care during her last month of life.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Condolence from Caroi Johnson on May 27th, 2015 8:11 pm

We were saddened to learn of Marianne’s passing through the Burlington TImes News. We both have enjoyed good times with Marianna and her husband Walt in the past. She was really a joy to be with and we made a lot of short trips for lunch in the past few months. I knew that she was failing, but as stubborn as she was she did not always want me know her just how bad her last year has been. I loved her like a mother/sister and learned a lot from her. Her family meant a lot to her and she loved you. Again so sorry for your loss. Am sure she is enjoying her time now with Walt working in a garden in heaven.

Dear Family,
I was so sorry to read about Marianne’s passing. We worked together for many years in the Department of Biostatistics at UNC-CH. I saw Marianne sparingly after I left Biostatistics but we always communicated with special occasion cards and notes over the years. I thought so much of her and Walt and was sorry I wasn’t able to spend more time with them at their lovely home in Alamance County. I will always remember her and cherish my memories of our time together. She was a beautiful person.
My best regards,
“Trixie”, the nickname Marianne gave me when we worked together!

Dear Marianne’s family,

I was sorry to learn of her recent passing. I did not know her well, but always enjoyed her cheerfulness and friendliness at the Duke Fitness Center where we took a morning pool class together.

May the Lord comfort and bless you at this time –

Warmly,

Sharon Guyer
