Margaret Curtis McKinney, 87, of Chapel Hill, NC died peacefully in her home Wednesday, April 4, 2018. Mrs. McKinney was born in New York City on August 19, 1930 to Caleb and Susanne Curtis. She graduated from the Masters School, 1948, and Wellesley College, Cum Laude, 1952. She married Ross Erwin McKinney on June 21, 1952. Together for 66 years, they lived in San Antonio, TX; Wellesley, MA; and Lawrence, KS before moving to North Carolina in 1996.

Mrs. McKinney was a valuable contributing member to the communities she lived in – working as a volunteer in multiple organizations and supporting causes that were important to her. She was a member of the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Durham, a lifetime member of the League of Women Voters, and served on the Planning Commission in Lawrence, KS.

She was also an avid gardener, reader, movie watcher, and lover of family celebrations. In lieu of a memorial service, we would like you to honor her life by doing one (or more!) of the following: reading a good book, watching a great movie, celebrating a loved one’s birthday, walking through a park, thanking a teacher, visiting an art museum, working for your favorite political cause or candidate, voting, hugging a loved one, planting flowers, or taking a road trip.

She is survived by her husband, Ross McKinney; four children: Ross and his wife, Holly, of Chapel Hill, Margo McKinney-Kane of Durham, William and his wife, Laura, of Portland, OR, and Sue of Durham; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

If you desire, memorial gifts may be made to the Nature Conservancy (donations can be made online at https://www.nature.org/membership-giving/more-ways-to-give/tribute-honor-giving/index.htm) or the Carol Woods Charitable Trust (mail to: 750 Weaver Dairy Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27514).

Condolence from Carl and Joyce Burkhead on April 7th, 2018 11:01 am

Dear Ross and Family: We rejoice in Margie’s life; one filled with all kinds of experiences and more than most. Of course, married to Ross was a big part of this adventure but she was certainly an independent women of grace. As participants of some of her life, we count it a privilege to have known her. What a jolly and thoughtful hostess to many KU environmental gatherings. Of course, she will be missed by you and others. We will miss her too. We pray for your comfort in this time of separation. Love, Carl and Joyce Burkhead

Please accept this belated note expressing my sincere condolence on the loss of Mrs. Margaret McKinney. I have fond memories of my time as a environmental engineering student under Dr. Ross E. McKinney and the graduate student parties at the McKinney house where Mrs. McKinney was the perfect hostess. All students from near and far were welcomed and introduced to the McKinney family.

With warm and personal regards, I am

Corbin McGriff

Dear Dr. Ross E. Mc Kinney and Family: Please accept our sincerest condolences to all of the family in the loss of your wife Mrs. Margaret McKinney. As one of Dr. McKinney’s graduate students I remember how warm and gracious Mrs. McKinney was toward the graduate students. It meant so much to those of us from outside the United States and I especially still appreciate all your support at the beginning and throughout my study at your environmental department at KU.
Our prayers are with all of you.
Martin and Omaira Trnovsky
