Margaret Curtis McKinney, 87, of Chapel Hill, NC died peacefully in her home Wednesday, April 4, 2018. Mrs. McKinney was born in New York City on August 19, 1930 to Caleb and Susanne Curtis. She graduated from the Masters School, 1948, and Wellesley College, Cum Laude, 1952. She married Ross Erwin McKinney on June 21, 1952. Together for 66 years, they lived in San Antonio, TX; Wellesley, MA; and Lawrence, KS before moving to North Carolina in 1996.
Mrs. McKinney was a valuable contributing member to the communities she lived in – working as a volunteer in multiple organizations and supporting causes that were important to her. She was a member of the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Durham, a lifetime member of the League of Women Voters, and served on the Planning Commission in Lawrence, KS.
She was also an avid gardener, reader, movie watcher, and lover of family celebrations. In lieu of a memorial service, we would like you to honor her life by doing one (or more!) of the following: reading a good book, watching a great movie, celebrating a loved one’s birthday, walking through a park, thanking a teacher, visiting an art museum, working for your favorite political cause or candidate, voting, hugging a loved one, planting flowers, or taking a road trip.
She is survived by her husband, Ross McKinney; four children: Ross and his wife, Holly, of Chapel Hill, Margo McKinney-Kane of Durham, William and his wife, Laura, of Portland, OR, and Sue of Durham; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
