I remember Lisa fondly from class at Jordan with her quiet, lovely smile and camera in hand. Many of our best high school pictures were taken by her. She helped to shape our memories of that time. I saw her from time to time in the intervening years, and always felt grateful to have known her. Lisa was one of the most sincere and gently encouraging people I have ever met. My condolences are with her family and friends. Lisa’s gentle spirit, kindness and compassion will live on with us. We will miss her beyond measure.

Lisa had a wonderful soul – I don’t think anyone didn’t like her. She was a great friend at Duke, and I have many treasured memories of picking up trash, maintaining trails, grooming horses, talking, and dancing at the Urban Avenue Zoo with her. My heart aches.

Condolence from David Haring on June 14th, 2013 12:00 am

Lisa! I had no idea you were so sick. I was wondering why you hadn’t called to set up our annual walkabout with the lemurs. Each spring, I’d show you all the new infants, and we’d walk through the forests to marvel at the free ranging lemurs. Dear, sweet girl, you are one of the kindest, gentlest, most warm hearted, and, yes, quirkiest, people I have ever met. I might only see you once or twice a year, yet I always figured you would be here and somehow part of my life. Lisa, who called yourself the Queen of Erwin Road Wildlife, may you walk in pristine forests forever protected from developers and other money driven souls. May you be surrounded by abundant animal life, wild and domestic, also safe and sheltered from hunters and Erwin road traffic. May you wake at night with wonder to the sounds of the mysterious, distant calls of non-human wildlife: the owls, coyotes, bobcats and maybe, just maybe, when the wind is blowing perfectly, the ruffed lemur.
