In Memorial

Lesley Loftis Weaver died in the presence of her family on June 2, 2017 at age 65 after a five-year battle with fallopian tube cancer.  She was born in Durham, NC on November 3, 1951 at Watts Hospital to Dorothy and Shuler Loftis.  She attended Club Boulevard Elementary, Brogden Junior High and Durham High School.  After attending Queens College and the University of Georgia, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Sociology in 1974 and was married to Bill Weaver that year.  Lesley served as the choir director and organist at Pleasant Green United Methodist Church for forty years.  For over ten years, she taught middle school students with autism at Durham School of the Arts and Brogden Middle School.  She influenced the lives of many children through her work in the church and with special needs students.  She was a lifelong resident of Durham and a strong supporter of public school education.  The last year of her life was spent doing what she loved: traveling, spending time with family, and watching the Tar Heels win the NCAA Championship.  She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Jeff Dehmer; son and daughter-in-law, Will and Michelle Weaver; grandchildren Joe and Anna Dehmer; mother Dorothy Loftis, and brother Christopher Loftis.  Her father, Carlton Shuler Loftis, preceded her in death.

A funeral will be held at Pleasant Green United Methodist Church in Durham, NC on Saturday, June 10 at eleven o’clock in the morning with arrangements made by Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, CB #7295, UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7295 or to the Pleasant Green United Methodist Church Afterschool and Summer Camp Programs, 3005 Pleasant Green Rd, Durham, NC 27705.

Condolence from DeLane Griffis on June 6th, 2017 9:27 pm

I am so very sorry to hear about Lesley. She was a sweet , kind, beautiful woman. I have fond memories of seeing her when my family visited during our childhood years. Being with all the Loftis family was always so much fun. We reconnected while attending UGA. I couldn’t believe we were fellow Bulldogs. I regret we lived far away n were unable to be good friends. To a Aunt Dot, my prayers are with you during this difficult time. There really is no pain like that of losing a child, no matter at what age. I can say that as I lost my only child in 2015. God is with you on this journey. I know we will all meet again one day in heaven.
Love, a DeLane Loftis Griffis

Condolence from Lavern W Settles on June 7th, 2017 4:38 pm

I have had the Golden opportunity to work with Lesley at DSA aka old Durham High School and dine out after work on any given Friday. She was full of joy and love. She and I would often joke that we were distant cousins because my maiden name is Weaver. She was definitely a Jewel and she will be deeply missed. I am so sorry for your loss and I will continue to pray for your family that God will cover you each with the strength to get through this very difficult time.

Warmest Regards
Lavern Weaver Settles

A life well lived. She was such a ball of wisdom, humor and love. She loved her family and friend, as well as her Pleasant Green UMC.
Let’s try to keep her love alive by striving to be as soulful, as honest, as funny as she was. Happy most of the time, even with this dreadful cancer.
Peace and Godspeed to a very special woman❤️

I will always have wonderful memories of Lesley and her love for the children of Pleasant Green . Though we moved away almost twenty years ago I never forgot that she played Russian Easter each Easter morning. (I thought she played it just for me.).She will be so missed but with many lovely memories.

God has his earth angel now. Leslie, no matter what was going on at DSA, always kept a smile! I enjoyed our chats. If you were having a bad day… she always left you with a smile and a better mood! Happiness followed her! My prayers to her family and friends.

Condolence from Susan W Tilley on June 9th, 2017 10:43 pm

I have not seen Lesley since she was in high school and we lived in the same neighborhood along Maynard Ave. To me, she was glamorous-a cheerleader, an incredible piano player, and so stylish!
I used to look at her in awe. Never realized she had taught at DSA where my daughter graduated. It’s especially ironic since Lesley was one of the names I considered for my daughter! My condolences to her family in the loss of their mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, sister and all who knew her.

Condolence from Milton Little on June 10th, 2017 10:17 am

It was my honor and pleasure to work with Lesley at DSA. She was a great leader for us in the Exceptional Childrens’s Department. Also she was a kind, sincere , and fun colleague as she loved, guided and protected those children who are so vulnerable. Lesley has made her mark in the Durham community and takes her place as one of our Heroes. Go in peace my dear friend Lesley.
