I am so very sorry to hear about Laurie passing away. I taught at Mary Potter for two years before I retired. Laurie was always there to help me get adjusted to teaching middle school students Math after teaching 5th grade for 10 years. She always told me if I needed any help to let her know. And I did, especially when I needed an extra set of hands with the exceptional children’s class doing group work on Math projects. She always came into the classroom with a smile. She was very highly thought of. She will be missed.

My heart is truly heavy at this time. Not only did I have the wonderful pleasure of working with Laurie many years ago, but she also taught my daughter, and I was able to work for her at Granville Magnet. The Granville County Schools community has lost a wonderful educator who touched so many young lives. What a truly beautiful soul!!! May God be with you at this and carry you through the difficult time.

Condolence from Janet (VanLandingham) Drinnon on June 17th, 2015 11:01 pm

I had the privilege of knowing Laurie in her younger days through Girl Scouts and school in Williamston. She was always a genuine and compassionate person and a joy to be around. I was proud to have her as a friend.

While our paths have not crossed much since high school graduation, i always thought of her fondly. She and I communicated occasionally through social media and instantly picked up on the friendship we had some 35+ years ago. It is apparent she was well-respected and loved in her community and the educational arena in which she worked.

My deepest sympathies are extended to her husband George, her beautiful children, her sisters Angie and Lesley, and her other family and friends. May the wonderful memories you have of her bring you comfort now and in the days ahead. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

I’m so sorry for your loss in such a wonderful woman. Im very proud to have been there from the being . Being in her fist class as a child she showed us love and compassion. Being a child in the Orphange she opened The doors to the outside world by the text books and the field trips. That helped me through the traumatic child hood.
We attended her wedding because we were her children. She insisted we be there. So I was there from the beginning
I made the trip from Charlotte to Oxford for the first time since 1984 to see my dear dear friend and sat there in the funeral home saying I’m shockingly happy. Happy for her. I remember her marriage and did not know what it might Intel for us as children from the orphanage. This man is going to take her away. A woman who had brought the world to us. This man her husband gave the world to her. I got to see a large loving family at her service. Children , Inlaws, brothers, sisters and cousins all there. What a wealthy person she became from the energetic girl in 84 right out of college to this pillar of the community.
I have learned so much from her in such a very brief time that I had with her. The largest thing that I learned from her and it was not til after her passing is that don’t waste time that you are not guaranteed. Hold the ones close who are dear and let them know how much they mean to you.
Im sorry I never came back home to let her know that her efforts in me as a child was not in vein. You did make a difference. I will regret this for the rest of my life

Thank you for your heart and thank your family for sharing her with us at Oxford Orphanage John Nicholes 4th grade class of 1984

God speed my dear friend.
