Jyotsna Moy Dutta, 74, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2009.
Jyotsna Moy was born in Comilla, Bangladesh to the late Sudhir and Prativa Dutta on 1/11/1935. Jyotsna Moy came to the United States in 1963 as a Fulbright scholar to the University of Illinois at Urbana Champagne as a Masters student in Physics. Dr. Dutta went on to complete his Ph.D in Physics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1975 and then began research and teaching at North Carolina Central University. His work for the University exemplified the ideals of teaching, research and service. He taught a wide range of courses, worked on course development, and held many service appointments. His research, focused on renewable energy sources and material studies at sub-millimeter wavelengths, has been funded by grants from several federal agencies including the Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy Lab as well as others. Through the years, he trained and supported a number of students and many of his former students have gone on to careers in science and technology. He enjoyed listening to both Eastern and Western music, playing the Tabla, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.
Jyotsna Moy is survived by his wife Gouri Dutta and daughter Joyati of Durham and 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
Funeral Services were held at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 from the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 West Main St., Durham.
Visitation was held prior to the service from 1 PM to 2:30 at the Chapel of Hall-Wynne.
