Joseph Frank Podgurski, 90, was taken from us by God’s angels on August 3, 2018. His suffering has ended, and he has joined our Mom. Joe was born and raised in Philadelphia. After high school, where he was the band’s Concert Master. He enlisted in the US Navy, serving in WW ll. Following discharge, Joe met the love of his life, Pauline. They married May 8, 1949 and spent 65 years together.
Our Dad was an active member of his beloved church, St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Philadelphia where he was a member of the church choir, spent many years as President of the church council, was chairman of the building committee and faithfully guided the construction of the new Cathedral. He was a member and officer of the Ukrainian Orthodox League of the USA and member of UA Veterans Post #4.
Joe received his engineering degree from Spring Garden Institute and spent 42 years at General Electric Company becoming the manager of the Coil Services Division.
A move to North Carolina to be near family followed retirement. After by-pass surgery at Duke, Joe spent many days volunteering his time sharing his experience with patients waiting for this procedure and with those recovering.
Joe loved his family with all his heart. He was musically gifted and enjoyed family music sessions, playing the piano, organ or violin. He was a reliable source of comfort, always ready to do anything to help his children. Life will not be the same without him.
Surviving are his daughters, Pauline (Lee) Kuyper and Barbara Bonfiglio; grandchildren, Andrew Kuyper, Chris (Shannon) Kuyper, Christina (Phillip) Armfield; Joseph(Bridget) Bonfiglio and Lauren (Wes) Tise; and the great-grandchildren who always made him smile, Kayla, Madelynne, Ryan and Aedan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Anastasia, and his wife, Pauline.
We would like to thank the caregivers at Hillcrest for their devotion and kindness toward our Dad and our family during his stay. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 7, 2018 with visitation thirty minutes prior at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, Hwy 8306 NC-751, Durham, NC. Burial will follow with military honors at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
