Posted By Hall-Wynne On November 8, 2013 @ 12:00 am In Obituaries | 52 Comments

Johnson Delos O’Daniel born February 22nd, 1931 to Blanche and Johnson O’Daniel in Chatham County, North Carolina passed away on Friday, November 8th, 2013. Delos was raised on his family farm in Chatham County with his sisters Hazel and Marjorie and his brother Eddie.

Delos is survived by his loving wife, Jean Partin O’Daniel, his best friend and supporter for 58 years. Also surviving Delos are three wonderful and loving daughters, Beth Kimberly Easterling, Lisa Kay McGee and Cassandra Dee Copeland, three great son-in-laws, David Easterling, David McGee, and Mitchell Copeland, four beautiful and loving granddaughters, Hannah Easterling Howell and her husband Christopher, Katie Easterling, Ali McGee, Rebekah McGee, and two very lively and handsome grandsons, Matthew Copeland and Christopher Copeland, one great grandson Adam Christopher Ivers II, son of Katie and her fiancée Adam Ivers, and his loving brother William Ed O’Daniel and his wife Phyllis.

Delos was preceded in death by a loving daughter Tammy Leigh O’Daniel, a beautiful granddaughter Cassie Lynn Carter, and his sisters Hazel Allen and Marjorie Pickard.

Delos, who was given a Greek name by his grandmother Manie Williams, graduated from Pittsboro High School in 1950. He joined the U.S. Army and proudly served his country in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953, with the famed 25th Division, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery. Delos was extremely patriotic, loved his country and our flag, second only to family. He was a long time member of the Chapel Hill American Legion Post 6.

Following his military service, Delos went to work at UNC Hospital where he became the Director of Food Service and Catering before retiring in 1993. Delos was also the President of HOKY Sales Company, provider of floor care appliances to countless funeral homes, hotels, restaurants and other businesses nationwide.

From birth until his marriage he was a member of the Orange Chapel United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent. Delos later became a member of the Carrboro United Methodist Church where he served on many boards and committees and was a member of the church choir.

He also served on many boards in Orange County and on the Carrboro Town Board, and also was the chairman of the 747 Club of the Chapel Hill Chamber of Commerce. His gentle, kind nature and infectious personality led him to become a much loved and well respected figure in many circles of the community.

Delos also was a staunch supporter of the Tar Heels, especially Tar Heel Baseball and could often be found in the stands at Boshamer Stadium cheering on his beloved Tar Heels.

Delos loved the Christmas season and cherished that his daughters and their families spent every Christmas at the “family” home with him and Jean. He loved his family deeply and will be missed by all.

The O’Daniel family would like to thank all the doctors and staff at UNC Hospitals, the nurses and aides at UNC Hospice, and his healthcare aide Anita.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 pm, Friday, November 15 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Services for Delos will be at 11 am Saturday, November 16 at Carrboro United Methodist Church with interment immediately following at Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro.

In lieu of flowers please consider donations to the following; the Lineberger Cancer Center at UNC Hospitals, UNC Hospice, and the Carrboro United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Anyone who appreciated nature, and particularly birds, the way Delos did, has a special respect for life and the Creator. His interest in history, particularly US History, was also a passion that he enjoyed sharing with others. He seemed to face his diagnosis with exemplary grace, dignity and courage. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family now.

Condolence from Art Gribensk on August 25th, 2015 10:20 am

I’m so sorry. I should have been there, but I was in treatment myself. Please forgive me. I love Delos and Jean and everyone of you. I still grieve after all these years and think of Tammy every single day, but I will never know how he and all of you suffered. Delos treated me like a son and you all treated me like family, and for that I will never forget nor felt I deserved. To this day the traditions and love Delos and the family taught me I continue to do. That is, just spread happiness where I can. Delos set the example for me on what a man, father and patriot should be. I still remember when I told him I was going to join the Army to fly. I told you all before my own family and how proud he was. I should have been there for you like you were for me. I hope you can forgive. me.
