John Paul Ondek, Jr., 95, died on Sunday, April 4, 2010. John was born in Pittsburgh, PA to the late John and Rose Ondek on January 18, 1915.
John graduated from Duke University in 1937. He entered the U.S. Navy right after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served at sea for four years. At 26 years of age, he was appointed as Captain of the escort vessel, PC 1253. He was charged first with protecting the Panama Canal, and then sent to the South Pacific to escort convoy. After his escort ended in the Philippines, he was sent back to D.C. and scheduled to take command of a Destroyer Escort in the Mediterranean. John’s orders were cancelled when Germany surrendered and ended the war. From there, he was sent to St. Mary’s Preflight in Northern California where he met and married his wife Doris in San Francisco. They later moved to Pittsburgh, PA and John became CEO of Ondek Quality Meats until his retirement in 1972. In December of 1992, John and Doris moved to The Forest at Duke in Durham, NC.
John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris R. Ondek; daughters Barbara and her husband Ronald Zawoysky of Clifton Park, NY, and Janet Ondek of Washington, D.C.; granddaughter Karen Attwood and her husband Brian of Cary, NC; and great-granddaughter Mae Attwood.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 9, 2010 from the Hall-Wynne Funeral Service Chapel, 1113 West Main St., Durham. Diaconical Minister Danielle Kosanovich will officiate. Interment will follow at Maplewood City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday, April 8th at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
