Jeannette Boothe Barbour, 82, passed away peacefully at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, NC, with her family at her side, on Saturday, May 23, 2015. She was a lifelong resident of Durham. Jeannette was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1932. She graduated from Durham High School 1951, where she was a cheerleader and continued to lead her class by organizing class reunions over the years.
Following her marriage to Charles D. Barbour and starting their family, Jeannette was employed in a variety of positions, most notably for Home Savings and Loan of Durham. She completed her working years as a realtor with Chesson Realty.
With her husband C. D., she learned to fly small planes and successfully flew solo. On the ground, she loved dancing, especially tap dancing, and was renowned as one of the Twinkle Toe Twins, with her sister Jeanne. Jeannette was an avid bridge player and enjoyed many social endeavors with area organizations and was a member of the Willowhaven Country Club.
Always in love with Myrtle Beach, she and C. D. started out camping with their young family, then getting a home there. She supported his golf game by keeping the family off the course and on the beach. Together they loved dancing and took up the native dance, “The Shag.” Back in Durham, Jeannette and C.D. were always active and enjoyed traveling together during his tenure as Executive Director of the North Carolina Democratic Party.
Jeannette would say that her greatest accomplishment was being a Mother, Mother-in-law, Aunt, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, giving love and encouragement to all of her loved ones, supporting their hopes and dreams. Whether nearby or down in Florida or up north to Philadelphia, Jeannette traveled to attend births and many other family events.
Married for nearly 64 years, Jeannette has dedicated the past 12 years to the care of her beloved C.D. who continues to live with Alzheimer’s.
