Janet Colleen (Hill) Kilsheimer of Durham, NC passed from this life to be with her savior Jesus on Dec. 10, 2018. She was surrounded by her family. Colleen was born in Shelby, NC on Oct. 16, 1925 to Boyd and Vera Hill. She was reared in Shelby.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her three brothers, Wayne, Randolph and Horace. After graduating from Shelby High School, Colleen attended Gardner-Webb College. She received a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned a Master’s degree in Social Work from the College of William & Mary in Richmond, VA. She later moved to Norfolk, VA where she met her future husband, Joseph Edward Kilsheimer. They were married on August 16, 1956, in Shelby.

Together, Colleen and Joe raised six children and had many adventures across the globe. Throughout her life, she was an advocate for children and served three separate terms as a PTA president. In her professional life, she was a social worker. In her last job before retiring, she specialized in placing special-needs children for adoption. When she was 13 years old, Colleen was riding a bicycle and was struck by a vehicle. The accident left her with only partial use of her right arm for the rest of her life. But she never let her disability limit her passion for life. She loved to knit, sew, garden and sing Christian hymns. She was a cheerful and avid camper. She loved her dogs.

Colleen is survived by her husband and by their children: Joe Jr.(Cheryl) and his children, Marilee, New York City and Peter, Orlando; Stephen; Tom (Maurine) and his children, Thomas ll, Los Angeles and Andrew, Santa Rosa, CA; Elizabeth and her children, Kaley, Lexington, KY and Kayden, Morehead, KY; John (Lisa) and his children, Jefferson and Mason, Greensboro, NC; and Susan (Darryl) and her children, Daniel, Maryville, TN and Joshua, Jefferson City, TN.

The family will receive friends from 1-1:45 pm on Monday, December 17 at Yates Baptist Church in Durham, NC.  A memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm at Yates Baptist Church, 2819 Chapel Hill Rd, Durham, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sunshine Class at Yates Baptist Church.
