DURHAM – James Thomas Carthen, Jr., age 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 18, 2020 sounded by his loved ones. He was born on March 9, 1931 in Durham to the late James Thomas Carthen, Sr. and Lillie Belle Gooch.
He proudly served in the US Navy from 1948 to 1952 and Korean War. J.T. retired from Liggett Myers Tobacco Company.
A faithful longtime member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, he will be remembered for cooking dinner plates for those in need and decorating his home at Christmas. He loved the beach, gardening, and reading his bible.
Known as J.T. by all, he was survived by his daughters, Deena C. O’Neal (Mike) of Durham; Teresa S. Spence (Bernie) of Sewell, NJ; Toni L. Barrett (Mike) of Ocean Isle Beach; Wendy G. Dixon of Bahama; his sister, Doris Jones of California. J.T. was blessed with nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and numerous friends that he loved and cared for deeply.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Mildred E. Carthen and second wife, Betty L. Carthen; a sister, Magaline Hunt and his only son, Kenneth L. Carthen.
A private funeral service was held in the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery.
The family would like to thank his friends who visited often. They would also want to express a sincere appreciation to his two full time caregivers Robin and Lindy and also to Liberty Hospice Staff who enlightened his life and gave him excellent, loving care. Words can’t express for the care J.T. received during his final months.
