I loved working with him and will always remember his smile. I’m not sure I ever remember him without a smile. He was a great colleague! Blessings to your family in this difficult time.

I was very sad to hear of Jim’s passing, but know that one day we will be reunited in a perfect place. I met Jim while working at GTE in 1979 and we quickly became friends. He was intelligent, had a great smile and sense of humor, was a fellow UNC alum, was athletic, gave excellent advice and above all else- Jim was a man of his word. Jim Powell’s friendship has made me a better man and I look forward to the day I will see him again.

I worked with Jim in the early 1990’s while working at the UNC Student Stores and occasionally since while continuing to work at UNC. I also remember buying pizzas from him at the Durham Bulls games for my daughters when he worked concessions. Jim was always pleasant and had a smile to share. He will be missed by many. Praying for your family during this difficult time.

I am lucky to consider Jim my friend for the past 16 years. Being able to work closely with him for the last 10 years or so was as a bonus! His wit was quick and effortless, it snuck up on me many times! Being able to attend some conferences together, to play golf, and just to spend some time with him was always a pleasure. And I know how much he loved his family, going into his office the pictures of the grandkids were always in a prominent place.
Ava and I send our deepest sympathy’s to you all.

Prayers up for all of you! Worked with Jim at GTE, in fact he was either my supervisor or manager at least 3 times. Loved working for and with him. Great sense of humor but could take a joke as well as give one. Remember filling his office with balloons and his car with packing peanuts!! Sure he did nothing to deserve it, ha, ha. Thoughts and prayers .
