Jacqueline Marie Stanislaw Zinn died peacefully on July 16, 2013, in her Chapel Hill home surrounded by her loving family.
Jacqueline is survived by her devoted husband of 33 years, Douglas C. Zinn, and their four loving children; Christopher, Jerry, James and Mary Kathryn; her faithful mother, Anne Stanislaw; her four dedicated siblings; sister, Joan Shanahan and husband, Brien; brother, Jerome Stanislaw and wife, Jeanine; sister, Elizabeth Wilson and husband, Patrick; brother James Stanislaw; Alicia Stanislaw; and her caring in-laws Charles and Mary Zinn. She was blessed with twelve wonderful nieces and nephews; Conor and Regan Shanahan; Blake, Davis and Liza Stanislaw; Madeline, Laurel, Mara and Liam Wilson; Gwyneth, Phoebe and Lilly Stanislaw. Jacqueline is also survived by two maternal aunts, Eleanor Verba; Joan Crowe and husband, Jim, and one paternal aunt, Doris Jean Vinkler and husband, Paul. She was pre-deceased by her beloved father, Jerome J. Stanislaw, M.D.
Jacqueline was born in St. Louis, MO on January 3, 1957 to Dr. & Mrs. Jerome J. Stanislaw. She spent most of her childhood in Warren, OH, graduating from John F. Kennedy High School in 1975. She graduated magna cum laude from Duke University in 1979 and received her MBA from UNC Business School now Kenan Flager in 1989.
Jacqueline joined Burroughs Wellcome in 1983 as a Clinical Research Associate I. She progressed through several positions of increasing responsibility culminating as a Clinical Research Scientist III. She made significant contributions to projects in the Hematology/Inflammation and Cardiovascular Sections including initiating and monitoring the first Burroughs Wellcome Co. IND-sponsored study conducted in Europe. Jacqueline then joined the R&D Project Management department within Glaxo Wellcome and contributed to the development of several successful drugs ZybanÒ, LamictalÒ, LanoxinÒ and worked across a number of therapeutic areas neurosciences, cardiovascular, metabolic. Jacqueline then turned her attention to developing new project managers, firstly as a section manager and finally within GlaxoSmithKline as the head of the project management group based in RTP.
Whatever the task, Jacqueline began it with alacrity, and completed it in an orderly, diligent and expeditious manner. Whether she was competing in triathlons, working on NDA’s for GSK, or running training sessions, she was always very thorough and committed to excellence. The role, of which she was most proud, was mother. When she was watching her children mature by playing in sports, participating in school activities, and relaxing at home or on family vacations, Jacqueline received her greatest joy.
Jacqueline was passionate about dance as a young child and carried that throughout her life. She had over decades-long tenures as a dancer with the Warren Civic Ballet Company in Warren, OH and the Chapel Hill Ballet Company. She was a student in the first American Dance Festival at Duke University in 1978, after which she was a steadfast attendee of dance performances every year through 2012.
Jacqueline was extremely grateful for the overwhelming support she received from her family, the Saint Thomas More Church and School community, dear friends, office colleagues at GlaxoSmithKline, and the dedicated and caring health care providers at Duke University Medical Center and beyond. These loving individuals gave her tremendous strength and courage to persevere throughout her challenging battle with cancer and her end-of-life experience.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 10:00 AM Saturday from St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Chapel Hill. In lieu of flowers contributions in Jacqueline’s name may be made to the Tisch Brain TumorCenter at Duke University Medical Center, www.cancer.duke.edu/btc/or the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC www.americandancefestival.org.

Condolence from Kimberly Eastman Zirkle on July 16th, 2013 12:00 am

What a lovely lady with a wonderful spirit! I always loved bumping into her at BW/GSK and always felt better after having encountering her beautiful, effervescent self. I did not know about her brain tumor and gasped when I read the Unicorn announcement of her passing. I always felt a special bond with her since there aren’t too many people in this world who are fortunate to have married men with last names beginning with a “Z”. May those of you who mourn the most be comforted by the love she sends from above with her everlasting soul! Peace and blessings as you grieve her passing and celebtate the life she lived so gracefully!

Condolence from Ron Hudson on July 16th, 2013 12:00 am

Jacquie was a fun friend with whom I enjoyed interacting when we worked together at Burroughs-Wellcome Co. We were first acquainted when Jacquie would visit the Clinical Data Management Department where I worked. We got to know each other better when we were briefly assigned to the ICRIS project at the same time in the early 1990s.

I left work, myself, in 1994 and lost touch with many of my friends and colleagues, including Jacquie, but I remember her very fondly. I offer my best wishes to the family.

Condolence from Fraser MacFarlane on July 17th, 2013 12:00 am

Jacqueline your courage, passion and love for your family and your work will never be forgotten. You were a true inspirational colleague to work with and will never be forgotten. Fraser, Lucy, Isla, Archie and Imogen MacFarlane.

Doug, Christopher, Jerry, James and Mary Kathryn,

We wanted to express our deepest, heartfelt sorrow for Jacquie’s passing. We are grateful to have known her and will remember her as an inspiration. She approached each day during her end-of-life experience as she did prior to it: with strength, dignity and grace. We hope that you can gain some sense of peace from the knowledge that she is at rest.

Condolence from Karen Wolf on July 17th, 2013 12:00 am

I had the pleasure of working with Jacquie at Burroughs Wellcome. Although I was only a few months younger, I looked to her as a role model and mentor. She was bright, even-tempered, dedicated and always kind. I learned a lot from her about science and about being successful as a woman in the work world.
My deepest sympathy to the Zinn/Stanislaw family and my gratitude to those who supported Jacquie through her illness.

Condolence from Edie McMillan on July 17th, 2013 12:00 am

While Jackie and I only worked together on one project, we sat around the corner from each other for years. It’s so easy to get focussed on work and forget the others around you, but Jackie always had a smile and a cheerful greeting. I also always enjoyed seeing her with her family at the Carolina Theatre. We shared our love of the arts in many chats. She will be missed.

Our Tour abroad in ’05 was great, but in ’06 we had a chance to sing at Jacquie’s home church in Warrren, Ohio, Church of the Blessed Sacrament, hosted by Mrs. Stanislaw, her Mom. I worked with Jacqueline in the late ’90s at then Glaxo Welcome. She was smart, classy and always a role model for work family balance. I learned so much from those years and I was sad today to hear about her passing. I can imagine the impact she could have on those around her and even though I only had a sliver of her time, I appreciated it. She is in my thoughts and I hope that her family knows that she made a difference in many people’s lives even if I only spent a short time in her daily life.

Hello to everyone, Early this morning, it came to my attention that Jackie has pass on. I was very surprise and sadden hearing the news. Please accept my condolences. I met Jackie for the first time in high school back in 1971, since then I have never met another genuine person as she. She was absolutely a delight to be with, not just to me but to all who have cross her path. My Mother always told people that I was very selective who I choose to have for a friend, she was a true friend indeed. To the Stanislaw family to whom I know, I always thought highly of your family, Jackie came from a great stock. She is now in Heaven, singing God praises through Christ Jesus, one day we will join Jackie again in the presence of our Lord. May God comfort you in mourning…..Tom Costantino

Condolence from SHARON BUERGER on July 26th, 2013 12:00 am

Dear Mrs . Stanislaw, Joanie, Jerry, Lisa, James, Doug and children,
We were so very sorry to hear of Jackie’s passing.
My Mom, being a neighbor and a friend of Annes, and my Dad a friend of her late Dad’s and patient as well, watch her grow up down the street on Coventry, in Warren. I was about 4 years younger than Jackie and as a young child admired her beauty, kindness toward others, and her athletic talent. She was smart and “full of life” early on and while she passed far too young, it looks as though she accomplished so much in such a short amount of time. It is amazing how truly rich her life was with her family, career, passion of the arts, and her discipline to mantain physical fitness through participating in triathalons.. It sounds as though she lived a auththentic life, true to herself and others. Please know that we have all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

Our heartfelt sympathy and prayers are with you always. My favorite memories of Jacque are the times I saw her at the swimming pool during the summer months. She will be missed for many many reasons and I will always keep these memories as inspiration.
