Posted By Hall-Wynne On May 15, 2019 @ 12:40 pm In Durham,Obituaries | 10 Comments

Jackie Cates passed away surrounded by her family on May 15, 2019 and is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, whom she served faithfully for over 60 years.

Jackie was a Rural Billing Supervisor at NC Blue Cross Blue Shield in the 60’s and 70’s and later worked with her husband Tom Cates in his insurance business (Cates Insurance Agency).  She was much loved by all who had the privilege of working with her.

Jackie is survived by her son David Cates (Andrea), her daughter Sheila Cates Carpenter (Mark), her brother John H. Crotts, Jr. (Jane), and 5 grandchildren, Victor Carpenter (Maria), Matthew Carpenter (Tyler), Abigail Carpenter Kartzinel (David), Daniel Cates and Andrew Cates (Esther) and 11 great grandchildren.

Jackie was a member of First Baptist Church of Durham for 10 years.  She taught Junior Girls Sunday School at Grey Stone Baptist for years.  She also taught AWANA at the Gospel Center and loved working with children.  Jackie trusted Christ as her Savior as young adult through the ministry of Pastor Henry Anderson and Grace Baptist Church.  Through hers and her husband’s loving example and sharing – her entire family has trusted Christ and will join her in heaven one day.   It is only because of Jesus’ grace and sacrifice that she is now enjoying her reward in heaven.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 20, 2019 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church, 414 Cleveland Street, Durham, NC 27701. Visitation will be held at 10:00am prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 414 Cleveland Street, Durham, NC 27701.

I was SO saddened to hear of your mom’s passing today. I know it’s only been a very short time since Tom’s death. It seems sometimes when couples are married a very long time, they pass away weeks apart. Only thing harder than losing a parent is losing both only weeks apart. My husband, Barry, who met you again today, lost his 11 weeks apart due to cancer. I know what truly devoted Christian parents you had and what wonderful people they were. Dad and I worked side by side for years and his faith showed in all he did. My heart and prayers go out to both of you What a blessed reunion they are having tonight.. God bless your family

Sheila, Dave and families, So sorry to read of Ms. Jackie’s passing. We lost Wayne’s parents within ten months of each other in the mid-1980s and it’s hard to comprehend how quickly you have had to say goodbye to both your mother and dad. A strong faith is sustaining. Jackie was a beautiful and kind lady. Our sincerest sympathy to each of you. Love, Starr & Wayne Brogden

Sheila & David, Billy and my hearts are so saddened by Tom and Jackie’s deaths. They both were the best Christian neighbors we have ever had. We were not only good neighbors, we were great friends since 1977 when we moved here. As Christians ourselves, it was so good to have them nest door. I will surely miss mine and Jackie’s long conversations. She was so easy to talk to and always had a positive outlook. I surely loved her very much. She was here to comfort me when both of my parents passed away so close together,as she and Tom did. It’s a very hard thing to accept them being gone, but we know they are not lost when we know exactly where they are. They are just waiting at the gate for you all to join them . I’m sure they are happy to be together again.

Dear Sheila, David and families,

So sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. May the Holy Spirit comfort you through this difficult time. I remember hearing stories of when we were babies and our parents lived on either side of a duplex on Maynard Av. Sending prayers.
