Giovanni graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1952 and married the love of his life, Myrna Howerton on June 5, 1955. He was a member of McMannen United Methodist Church in Durham, NC. He formed GE Micol Associates Technical Services in 1970, a  company that provided drafting services to local engineering firms. Giovanni was preceded in death by his wife, Myrna Howerton Micol.

Giovanni grew up in a company house at the Eno Steam Plant village where he built many lasting relationships. He had fond memories spending his summers with his grandparents on the old Micol Farm. He would later attribute those formative years as some of the most important character building years of his life.

Mr. Micol was very active in the community. He was instrumental in forming the first booster clubs at the former Stanford Jr High and Orange High schools and served on the Orange County Planning Board in the 1970s. Giovanni was very active and enjoyed playing golf, tennis, and fishing and most recently looked forward to his evenings at home feeding the deer and caring for his dogs.  His outings to Waffle House and WalMart were always the highlights of his day.

John, David, Mark, Kim and the rest of this loving family… I am so sorry for your loss. My heart is truly broken. Uncle Mike was a wonderful man and a special uncle to me. I know the days, weeks and months to come will not be easy. I pray for each one of you that God will give you strength to get through this time . Know that Uncle Mike will be looking down on each one of you and will continue to send his love through the warmth in the sunshine, the coolness of a breeze on a hot day or the awesome wonder of a snowflake that falls from the sky. I know he loved each one of you so very much and you all helped make his life special. Know he is in Heaven with Aunt Myrna and there is a beautiful smile on both of their faces.
I love you all

Condolence from Jerry &Lynda Kellis on November 29th, 2018 11:05 pm

I have known Mike since I was 11 years old and so happy when he married the love of his life, my sister, Myrna. He was always kind and supportive to me and my mother while I was growing up. As an adult I loved being around Mike and Myrna. They were so much fun to be with playing tennis, golf, going out to eat and going on trips together. Since Myrna’s death, I have talked with him on the phone every week for 9 years. I will miss those weekly phone calls and seeing him. Jerry and I are deeply saddened over his death and he will be missed so much by us. We thank God for Blessing our lives with such a kind, caring, and loving brother-in-law. He will live on in our memories and through the legacy he left for his loving family.
We Love All Of You, Aunt Lynda & Uncle Jerry

Condolence from Charles Gibbs on November 29th, 2018 11:41 pm

Micol’s family, sincere condolences for your loss. I know he’ll be missed.
He was a pleasure to work with, back in the mid-60’s as electrical engineerig consultant
when he was with Walter Smith Engineering. They were consultants for Archie R. Davis,
Architect where I was draftsman. I used to call him Mike-Mike – he signed his drawings
just…Micol. And since he was called Mike I just took up nickname Mike-Mike since it seemed he had first and last name the “same”.
Fondly remember our friendship.
My best to you all,
Charlie Gibbs

A fellow graduate of Hillsboro High School, I grieve the loss of yet another of us. Giovanni married my classmate, Myrna, our songbird. I grew up hearing the beautiful voices of this family. At our last reunion in April, 2017, Giovanni was among my special guests who included John and Dawn Ferretino. Giovanni brought many photos of Myrna that were displayed in the memorabilia for the Classes of 1954, 1955, and 1956. I was so grateful for the presence of all these people. I have photos, but do not have the know-how to convey them in this format. Love to all.

Condolence from Joni Whiting on November 30th, 2018 9:50 pm

Giovanni was my Uncle through my Aunt Myra who was my daddy’s sister (Mather Jr) Steven Howerton. My family would like to convey our deepest love and condolences to all the family who loved Uncle Mike and remember fondly him as a kind and loving man. I have often wished we could have been raised together with such loving and kind people in our family, I know that his loss is deeply felt and want you all to know that we are thinking of you and care about you all. I remember him as young, happy and full of life, I remember him as kind and gentle. I remember my cousins when they were little as little replicas of my Aunt and Uncle and will forever keep all of you in my heart…with much love and heartfelt sorrow
Please accept our heartfelt pain at your loss. Joni Whiting, sons Gregory and Bradley and daughter Melissa

Dear Micol Family, I really enjoyed working with Mike here at BDE through the years. We had some very
funny times filming our boss’s antics for his wife and friends birthday parties. Mike was an expert Cameraman! He had a ready smile and a wonderful personality. I know each of you will miss him dearly and know that he and Myrna have had an awesome reunion in Heaven! I pray God gives comfort to each of you and know Mike was so very proud of each and every one of you!
