Durham – Dr. Sydney A. Rose, 98, died peacefully on Thursday, January 19, 2017. He was the husband of the late Doris Owen Rose for 70 years.
He was born in Paterson, N.J, to the late Lena Cohen and Archibald Rose. He attended Rutgers and Temple Universities to earn his DDS. He served his country in the US Army with the 101st Airborne in WWII in France, Austria, and Germany, earning the Bronze Star. He was chief resident at Meadowbrook Hospital in New York and then a long time practicing oral surgeon and member of the SUNY Farmingdale and New York University faculties as well as hospital staff president at Hempstead General in New York.
He was an avid professional and college sports fan, scout leader, baseball and professional tennis umpire. He played tennis as well as coached individuals, high school, and college teams. He served as president of the NC Association of Tennis Professionals. Dr. Rose also enjoyed cigars, dogs, and beaches.
Dr. Rose worked to give his family the good way of life he envisioned. He was a generous, loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his sons, Raphael, of Durham and Richard. of Ithaca, NY; his daughter, Rachael Buck of Westbury, NY; his grandchildren Breklyn, Jesse, John, Truly, Anna, Dusty, Zachary, Owen, Emerson, and Vaughn; eight great grandchildren; and his sister, Natalie R. Marks, of West Palm Beach, FL.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Sunday, January 29, 2017 in the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 W. Main Street, Durham, NC. Burial will follow in Markham Memorial Gardens.
