Doris W. Williams

Doris Gray Whitaker Williams, 96, died Monday, June 22, 2009 at Britthaven of Chapel Hill.

Born in Durham in 1913, she was the daughter of the late William Edgar Whitaker, Sr. and Annie Pearl Lasater Whitaker. After graduating Durham High School in 1930, Doris attended Duke University for two years. In 1935, she married Crawford Samuel Williams. In addition to the joy and pride of raising a family, she and her husband were lifelong members of Lowes Grove Baptist Church, and in 1984 established a scholarship fund at the church. She was a loving wife to Sam until his death in 1994.

Surviving are her son Crawford Edgar Williams and his wife John; daughter Lucy Gray Williams Woodell and husband Philip; grandchildren, David Woodell Rhonda, Brian Woodell Michelle, Ashley Williams Ohrt Brad and Ford Williams Mikel; great-grandchild Lyla Qian Woodell. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her sister, Frances Whitaker Sloath and brother William Edgar Whitaker, Jr.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Thursday at Lowes Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Forest Gale officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lowes Grove Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, 4430 S. Alston Ave., Durham, NC 27713.

Arrangements are with Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
