Doris Sellars Sorrell

Doris Sellars Sorrell, 92, died Saturday at Croasdaile Pavilion. She was born February 6, 1921 in Mebane, NC as one of six children to Julian and Minnie Roney Sellars. After studying music at Greensboro College she went to New York City to further her education at the New York School of Interior Decoration. Doris retired after 25 years from the University of North Carolina as the Director of the Interior Design Dept. In 1991 she was presented a Distinguished Alumni Award from the Alumni Assn. of Greensboro College. Throughout her life, Doris was a passionate and prolific gardener. Most recently she became known as the “flower lady” at Croasdaile Village, employing her talents in establishing the English garden, Rose gardens and the Japanese garden. She was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her children, Jane Sorrell Walden of Durham, Fred Gordon Sorrell, III of Costa Rica; her grandson, Geoffrey Sorrell of Waverly, AL; and sister, Catherine Sellars Green of Burlington. She was predeceased by her husband Fred Sorrell, Jr. in 1985.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday in the Few Chapel of Croasdaile Retirement Community. Private burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery. Donations in Doris’ memory may be made to: Croasdaile Retirement Community, c/o Garden Fund, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Pkwy. Durham 27705.

I am so sorry to here your mom died, My mom Eileen King would also like to say how sorry she is of your loose of your mom. My mom worked in your moms dress shop until going to work at Duke University. I can remember going to your moms house and her talking about her flower garden. I even remember going to the beach with your mom. With Gods help, I am sure you will make it through as the days go by.

We are so sorry to hear of Doris’s passing. We have many fond memories of good times shared with her. For many years she was a great neighbor and friend. After moving to Croasdaile Retirement Village she made valuable contributions especially in the creation and upkeep of the gardens. She will be missed and long remembered.
