Virginia Doris Crouse Adams passed away gently surrounded by family Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at her home in Durham, N.C. She was 93.
Originally from Thomasville and a graduate of Appalachian State University, Doris moved to Durham in 1950 to teach home economics at Durham High School. She was married to Rod Adams of Adams Concrete for forty years before his death in 1994. An active member of Duke Memorial Methodist Church and Home Economists of NC, Doris was a gracious hostess who delighted in her role as wife and mother of two. Grandchildren loved “Honey” and always enjoyed playing at her house. In recent years, one granddaughter and three fellow educators lived with Doris. These twenty-something-year-olds brought much laughter, life and energy to Doris in the “Honey Hut,” as they affectionately called her home.
Doris is survived by her son, Roderick Dhue Adams Jr, his wife Jane and their four children, as well as her daughter Meredith Adams Buckner and her husband Mike. Doris was predeceased in 2011 by her granddaughter and namesake Virginia “Ginny” Lee Buckner.
Following a private burial on Sunday, December 10, the family will welcome visitors in the home of Rick and Jane from 4 – 6 pm at 3740 St. Marks Road, Durham. Many thanks to all who helped make Doris’s last years pleasant ones.

Rick and Meredith, I am sorry to learn of your mom’s passing. My prayers and blessings go out to you and your families. Your mom and dad were both such good and generous friends to my mom and me, especially after my dad’s death. I remember Doris as a woman of kind and gentle grace. I know you and your children will miss her but what a rich and full legacy of memories she must be leaving for you all.

I loved reading what you wrote about Doris! I loved her big fashion glasses. She was such a sweet and proper lady. She loved clothes and looking nice. It was a treat to work with her. I am flying back from Atlanta late Sunday, but my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Love & sympathy to you all. I have fond memories of Aunt Doris. She was a beautiful lady. I have a wishbone pin with a pearl on it that she gave me many many years ago when we all use to get together a MaMa Adams at Christmas. It has always been a special memory of her. I know you will miss her. Love to you all.

Condolence from Chris Perry on December 10th, 2017 6:28 pm

My mother, Elsie Perry, thought Doris was one of the finest people she knew. Although I had only a few opportunities to talk to Doris, I always found her to be a positive and cheerful person. The world could use a lot more people like Doris. I am so sorry for your loss.

Condolence from Joe Dobson on December 11th, 2017 4:12 pm

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family. Doris and Rod Adams were shining examples of a Lady and a Gentlemen; we can only strive to carry ourselves with such mannerisms. We know she will be greatly missed, especially at this Holiday Season. May God Bless and comfort all of you.
