Cyrus Frank Franklin Rawls

RALEIGH — Cyrus Franklin Rawls, 67, of Raleigh passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. Frank was a graduate of the class of 1965 at Jacksonville High School and the Charlotte Business School. Following graduation he worked for the National Center for Health Statistics, where he retired after 36 years. Following retirement he worked in the Wake County School System as a substitute teacher. He was an active member of Highland United Methodist Church in Raleigh. He was a former member of the Raleigh Jaycees and was also a member of the Rams Club, a season ticket holder and avid Tar Heels fan. He could be counted on to be at Keenan Stadium cheering on the Heels. Frank will be remembered for his smile, his willingness in helping others and his devotion to his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cyrus Franklin Rawls, Sr. and Mildred Pelletier Rawls, and his son, John Cyrus “Cy” Rawls.

Surviving are: his wife, of 41 years, Susan Ferrell Rawls of Raleigh; a sister, Elaine Rawls of Cape Carteret; cousins, Sam A. Starling and family of Raleigh and New York, Jeremiah P. Starling and family of Raleigh and New York, and Jeanette S. McIlwean and family of Rocky Mount and Wilmington.

Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Rd., Raleigh. Graveside services will be held 3:30 p.m. Friday at Jacksonville City Cemetery in Jacksonville, NC. Flowers are welcome or donations may be made to Duke Cancer Center, 20 Duke Clinic Circle, Durham, NC 27710 or to the Library Fund at Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Rd., Raleigh, NC 27607.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the staff in Medical Intensive Care, Surgical Intensive Care and 9100 Oncology for their support and loving care. Also, to our family and friends, this journey with Frank, as difficult and sad that it has been, would have been much harder had it not been for all of your love and support. Susan…I am so sorry to learn of Frank’s death. He was a kind, wonderful friend. Our years at NCHS are some of my most cherished memories. We worked hard, yet had a lot of fun. I have appreciated his keeping us all up to date on NCHS happenings since retirement. Thoughts and prayers for you and his famiy.
