Catherine was born in Bangor, ME on October 28, 1940, attended an Episcopal boarding school for girls in Mendham, NJ for her highschool and obtained a bachelor’s degree in business from Arizona State University. After careers with Westinghouse in Phoenix, the city of Albuquerque and as a realtor with Coldwell-Banker and Assoc. in Cary, NC she retired to care for her llamas, husband Jim and other animals.

She is survived by husband Jim of forty years, her daughter Shaune Mattsson of Portland, OR with her husband Steve, son Chase and daughter Sage; by daughter Diana Mayo and her children Emily and Leo; and by son James of Chandler, AZ.

Catherine suggests donations to her favorite charity, Best Friends Animal Society, in lieu of flowers. Interment will be later at the military cemetery in Phoenix, AZ where she will wait with her favorite desert sunsets and cacti until joined by Jim when his time arrives.

Condolences for the family of “Catherine Watts Vaughn”

Condolence from Stephanie & Kent on October 18th, 2012 12:00 am

We are so sad to have lost a wonderful friend, neighbor, rose and animal lover. Catherine approached death as in life; with courage, determination, wisdom and humor. We will do our best to care for her husband and the farm animals; not to mention the endless weed and grass growth, but we admit to our powerlessness to ever match Catherine’s talents to master such challenges. We love you Catherine. We love you Jim. Steph and Kent

Condolence from Rita Coggins on October 20th, 2012 12:00 am

Jim, no wonder I had been thinking of you two for the last two months. I am very sad to hear that Catherine will be sharing her talents and humor in heaven instead of here on earth. But she was such a lovely gift while she was here and I am definitely blessed to have been around her at Christ Church. Steve and I extend a true heart felt love for you and Catherine. May your memories be as lovely as Catherine expressed. May God bless and keep you. Rita and Steve Coggns

Jim,
This is a poem I have read many times over the years. Hope it will comfort you and your family in some way.

The Rose Beyond the Wall

A rose once grew where all could see
Sheltered beside a garden wall
And, as the days past swiftly by
It spread its branches, straight and tall

One day, a beam of light shone through
A crevice that had opened wide
The rose bent gently toward its warmth
Then passed beyond to the other side

Now, you who deeply feel its loss
Be comforted, the rose blooms there
It’s beauty even greater now
Nurtured by God’s own loving care.

Condolence from Judy McLaughlin on October 22nd, 2012 12:00 am

Jim, & Family,
Just heard this afternoon of Catherine’s passing. I am sending my sincere condolences to you all. I remember Catherine as a small girl, my cousin, who lived for a few years with “grammy” when she was younger. Later years, when she came to visit she was “our special older cousin” who was gracious, and beautiful. So many memories I have. I am sure that you folks will miss her greatly and have many, many memories that will keep her near you over the years. God Bless. Judy

Condolence from Diana Mayo on June 9th, 2017 3:18 am

Dear Judy,
Thank you for your kind words. My mother spoke often of you and your family when we were young.. She spoke with special fondness and warmth of her years on the farm with Nanny J and the rest of the family. I hope you and yours are well.
