DURHAM- Ben Gerald Cunningham, 70, died Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Duke Regional Hospital. Born in Savannah, GA on June 1, 1944, he was the son of the late Metz Joyner Cunningham and Mary Louise Frisbee Cook. He was a long time resident of Durham County, NC.
He graduated from Savannah High School in Savannah, Ga. Ben enlisted in the Air Force after high school. After his service in the Air Force Ben attended Armstrong State College and then transferred to Georgia Institute of Technology graduating with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Physics. He loved the space program and followed it very closely. He also loved trips to Disney World with his family and visited it often.
After college, Ben went to work with GTE which is now Verizon. He worked in the engineering department and retired from Verizon in 2009 after 38 years.
Ben is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jayne Cunningham of Durham County, NC; and daughter Kathryn Ann Cunningham of Lexington, Ky. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Cook and wife, Brenda; nephews the Reverend Earl Saxon and wife, Judy; Michael Saxon and wife, Rosie; Tommy Cook and wife, Samantha; Joshua Cook; Matthew Cook, brother in law, Calvin Saxon; brother in law, Thomas Purvis, sister in law, Darlene Purvis, and mother in law, Lois Purvis.
