Barbara Hughes Simonton, 80, of Oxford, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, August 29, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Basil B. Hughes (Jeff) and Odell Seate Hughes. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Wesley Maynard Averette.

Barbara is survived by her husband, John E. Simonton; children, Cindy Bryan (Ben) of Oxford, Bonnie Averette of Raleigh, Greg Simonton (Connie) of Oxford, Kim Cowan (Jerry) of Middletown, PA, Sean Simonton (Michelle) of Christiansburg, VA; siblings, Patsy Fastige (Tony) of Richmond, VA, Ben Hughes (Hilda) of Oxford, Susan Cox (Pat) of Oxford; twelve grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and many other loving family and friends.

Barbara was born with a passion to care for others. She spent many happy years nursing at Granville Hospital, in a private practice in Oxford and found great joy in providing care for friends and family members whenever needed. Her creative talents were many: sewing, gardening and floral design, painting, and cooking delicious meals for special family gatherings. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren and the time she spent with them was precious to her. Her greatest loves were the Lord, her family, and growing beautiful flowers. Her concern and generosity for others knew no bounds.

The family will receive friends for visitation at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 4, 2017 at Oxford Baptist Church fellowship hall, 147 Main St., Oxford with the Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Condolence from Manie Parham Currin on September 1st, 2017 10:08 am

In our early days of marriage and move from the country, Barbara and Maynard were our closest friends. We spent time together almost every day either visiting or camping on Kerr Lake. Both Barbara and I were very busy in our careers and our physical closeness was impacted, but our hearts were connected and remained so through the death of Maynard and until her own shocking demise. Those days and duties at Hester Baptist Church were a common bond, and she was truly a child of God. My heart is heavy with grief not only for myself but for the family, including her siblings and cousins. May God be with and lift up your family in the closeness of His arms, but we know that Heaven has now gained another beautiful angel.
