Alice Brown Staton, age 86, died peacefully Tuesday evening, December 23, 2014 at Durham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Edgecombe County to the late Jesse Marcus and Lizzie Briley Brown.
A caring and kind woman, Alice developed many friendships over the years with people from all walks of life. She was a very soft spoken and sweet lady, and a true friend to all who knew her.
Alice was a caregiver in every sense of the word. Early in her marriage while her husband was serving in the Navy, she fostered and cared for many children while beginning her own family.
Later in life, she was by her husband’s side every day for over two years, caring for him at Tarboro Nursing Center until his death in 2007.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Carlton Staton; and a daughter, Jeanie Jauregui.
Alice is survived by her four children, Carlton Staton of Tarboro, NC; Alyce Capasso of Durham, NC; Herbert Staton of Greenville, NC; and Michael Staton of Tarboro, NC; thirteen grandchildren; twenty three great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
The family will conduct a private Celebration of Life at a later date.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation for the kindness and support of the staff and residents of Durham Adult Day Health, Hillcrest Convalescent Center and Durham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. They would also like to extend special thanks to Amedisys Hospice for their loving care during this difficult time.
A special thanks to her very close friend, Sam Do, who helped watch over her during her stay at Durham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and was always by her side.
