In Memorial

Alice Johanson passed away November 22, 2014 at her home in Durham, NC after a five year struggle with metastasized breast cancer. Alice was born May 5, 1938 in Hutchinson, MN, to Melvin and Charlotte Lindholm. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Arnold (“Arnie”) Johanson, two daughters, Kaaren Johanson of Durham, and Sara Jensen (Kirk) of Minneapolis, MN, a son Mark Johanson (Carolyn) of St, Paul, MN, four grandchildren, Tyler and Zoë Bartholomew, and Oskar and Claudia Jensen, and two sisters Grace Trittin (Ronald), of Dassel, MN and Janice Mathieu (Darrel) of Luck, WI.

Alice graduated from Dassel High School and from the University of Minnesota, with a degree in education of the visually handicapped. She lived much of her life in Moorhead, MN where she worked for Southeast Human Services in Fargo as a case manager for developmentally disabled children, and where she was very active in the League of Women Voters. On retirement she and Arnie moved to Durham, and she devoted herself to reading, helping to establish the American Village Book Club; knitting, specializing in afghans; Scrabble, virtually unbeatable; and listening to classical music. She enjoyed travel, especially regular visits to New York City and the Metropolitan Opera. She was a deeply beloved wife, mother and grandmother, a quiet and unassuming woman of great character and independence who touched the lives of many.

There will be a private gathering in celebration of Alice’s life in Minneapolis in the near future. Memorials may be sent to WCPE radio, Box 897, Wake Forest, NC 27588.

Arrangements are entrusted to Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, Durham. Online condolences at www.hallwynne.com.

Alice was my (premature baby) son’s case manager in Fargo 25 years ago. She was the first person who showed true caring and kindness to us and got us the help we needed. She was a wonderful person. God bless her and her family.

Sorry to read today in The Forum, Fargo, ND, the passing of Alice. We grew up in the same church, and attended Dassel High School. Alice was a grade ahead of me, but were Confirmation classmates at the Dassel Covenant Church. She and I were roommates at Lake Koronis Bible Camp. I remember her as a very smart girl, and shared some good times together. I remember calling her once on the phone when I had moved to Fargo, but never got together with her before she moved to NC. Blessed be her memory, and my sincere sympathy to her husband and family.

Sincerely,
Adelle (Nordstrom) Salveson

My deepest sympathy to Kaaren and all of your family on your loss of Alice. I met Alice in the American Village Woman’s Club in about 1999. I asked Alice is she would help me restart the Book Club that had recently stopped meeting. She took on the leadership of our Club with such enthusiasm and skill! She worked for many years to keep the Club running smoothly and we were all so very grateful to her for her unselfish service. She was one of the sweetest ladies that I have ever had the privilege to know and to call a friend. I will truly miss her.

My sympathy to you in the loss of your mother. I remember visiting her childhood home in Dassel and talking to her and her mother (my father’s cousin).
