Clarence Randolph Smith

C. Randy Smith, a beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2024. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him.


Randy was born on October 29, 1949, to Clarence Rudolph Smith and Anita Jane Kerr Smith in Durham, NC. Randy was known for his kind heart, his unwavering integrity, and his commitment to serving others. His commitment to his students and their education was monumental.


Throughout his life, Randy made countless meaningful connections with people from all walks of life. His genuine compassion and empathy touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.


Randy was a dedicated teacher, pouring his time and energy into his work with passion and dedication. He approached every task with a sense of purpose and a desire to make a positive impact, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and students alike.

In his leisure time, Randy enjoyed travel, finding solace and joy in the simple pleasures of life. Randy embraced each moment with enthusiasm and appreciation.


Randy is survived by his wife of 38 years, Judy Watkins Smith; his son, Paul Smith and his significant other, Allison May; his daughter, Angie Buettner (Scott) and precious grandchildren, Kinsley Bullard, William Buettner, and Owen Buettner, who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him. He will be deeply missed by his siblings, Steve Smith (Rosemary), Gary Smith and Lauri Smith and many extended family and friends who knew him.


A memorial service to celebrate Randy's life will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at North Henderson Baptist Church, 1211 N. Garnet Street, Henderson, NC. Friends and family are invited to come together to honor Randy's memory and share stories of his remarkable life at a visitation from 2:30 pm -3:30 pm.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North Henderson Baptist Church, Playground Fund, at 1211 N. Garnett St., Henderson, NC 27536, or to Oxford Preparatory School, Literacy Fund — causes that were close to Randy's heart.


Randy's legacy of love, kindness, and generosity will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. Though he may be gone, his spirit will continue to inspire us all.
